Hard disk- SCSI - starting and restarting - first turn on your hard drive then the Mac. If both are connected to a surge suppressor or power strip, you can turn them on simultaneously. Never turn off a Mac or hard disk when the smiling face is on screen. Don't hit the reset button on the programmer's switch - it will take much longer for the disk to restart. Wait until the Desktop appears then choose Shut Down from the Special menu. As soon as the screen blacks out and you hear the "BONG", turn off the Mac, then the hard disk. Be sure you do this BEFORE the smiling face appears. If your Mac and hard disk are connected to the same power strip, you can turn them off simultaneously - just as long as you beat the smiling face. If the face beats you, wait until the Desktop appears and Shut Down again.
